Modifying updates list generates SQL error

Another discussion with our DBA and the PSS engineer yesterday brought up some good questions.  I wanted to get some feedback on one in particular.  We upgraded our site database from SQL 2005 SP3 to SQL 2008 SP1.  Has anyone experienced issues resulting from an upgrade versus a clean install?

I have been told 500 is the theoretical limit. I also have seen clients with more.

The PSS engineer states that several other PSS Engineers agree that update lists over 500 updates will cause a performance impact in reading from the database.  I don't know of any TechNet article that notes this limit.  I also have never heard of this as being a best practice.

Has anyone ever heard of this before?  Is there an article that references this recommendation?

Hi,

Please keep us informed regarding your case with PSS. We are also seeing this error among others when updating, modifying large update lists.

I've opened a case with Premier Support and thus far it appears to be related to some sort of bottleneck to the site database server.

I haven't found a solution yet but received a new error when trying to modify our server baseline update list that contains over 400 updates:

Error:  Not enough quota is available to process this command.  Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070718

I read some where that this could be related to insufficient virtual memory.  I think I'm about ready to contact PSS on this one.

I'm having the same issue.  My list has 608 updates currently.  I've tried adding just 1 update and also about 30.  Both error out with the same as above.  If I add them to a new list, it works fine.  Has anyone found the reason or a solution?

I have read that deployment packages have a ceiling of 500, but haven't read anything similar about update lists.  I will talk to my manager about contacting PSS.  Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

I have heard people suggest there's a limit to how many updates you can to a deployment. Not sure if that's also true of a list. I thought that limit was theoretically 500 though I could be wrong. It wouldn't be permissions if it lets you add some update but not others. Maybe there's an issue with a particular update? I would likely call PSS at this point, sorry.

There are over 400 updates in our "overall" compliance list.  I tried creating a new update list, populated it with these updates, and then added more and I get the same error.  I don't know of anything else in the console causing a provider error.  The server gets restarted every month by software updates and this has been an issue since October.  I'm curious, could insufficient database perms be causing this?

How many updates are in this list currently? Does anything else in the console cause a Provider error? Have you tried to simply reboot the server?

Greetings,

Upon trying to add updates to our annual update list, the console crashes with the error below:

Error: Failed to add the software updates into the existing update list:

·   Name=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

·   ConfigMgr Error Object:

     instance of SMS_ExtendedStatus

     {

                     CauseInfo = "";

                     Description = "CSspConfigurationItem: SQL_ERROR";

                     ErrorCode = 3242722562;

                     File = "e:\\nts_sms_fre\\sms\\siteserver\\sdk_provider\\smsprov\\sspconfigurationitem.cpp";

                     Line = 1891;

                     Operation = "PutInstance";

                     ParameterInfo = "";

                     ProviderName = "ExtnProv";

                     StatusCode = 2147749889;

     };

     CSspConfigurationItem: SQL_ERROR

Errors

·The ConfigMgr Provider reported an error connecting to the ConfigMgr site database server. Verify that the SQL Server is online and that ConfigMgr site server computer account is an administrator on the ConfigMgr site database server.

Can anyone provide some direction as to what components we should be reviewing for trouble?

Thank you!
